Metaphysical approach to reflexogy.
What does "metaphysics" mean to you. A quick google gives quite a variety of
definitions from explanations of Aristotle's Metaphysics theories to
the meaning of life. When I use metaphysical in the context of
reflexology or other complementary therapies then to me it means
that the reflexologist is using the physical treatment to allow the
client to explore or entertain the possibilities that physical
manifestation of symptoms may be related to underlying thought
processes, feelings, emotions. To entertain the possibility that we can
look at our lives in a more symbolic way.
One or two famous proponents of what I would classify as
metaphysical approaches to reflexology would be Imre Somogyi and also
Chris Stormer whose books are well worth reading for those of you who
are interested. ( Reading
Toes - Your Feet as Reflections of Your Personality
and The
Language of the Feet )
There is also a reflexology technique which I'd like to explore
further in the near future myself - the Metamorphic Technique
. The Metamorphic Technique aims to use reflexology sessions as a tool
for personal transformation and growth. Check out the Courses page for details of the
upcoming courses on this technique.
It's always fascinating to hear from reflexologists around the globe
especially when they're so kind as to put pen to paper and contribute
an article for us. Many thanks to Glenda Hodge of EnergyForLiving in
Australia. Glenda has been a reflexologist for 12 years and is the
author of Holistic
Reflexology as well as an E-Book on reflexology.
Here's a small extract from Glenda's article explaining how she
approaches a reflexology session. It's great to hear from you
Glenda.
"My approach to reflexology is primarily focused on uncovering the
cause of a problem rather than working on the effect. The body is
not in stress, discomfort or disease simply to make life unpleasant or
difficult. It is trying to communicate something. When I
look at sore feet and body symptoms from a metaphysical perspective,
pain and discomfort take on a different meaning.
The eight principles I work with are generally well known, but when
combined create a powerful tool of possibility and self-discovery" -- Read

Differing approaches to Reflexology
It's fascinating to see the different approaches to reflexology. At one end of the spectrum you have practitioners using heat lamps and percussion hammers to work on particular reflexes in a very practical way while at the other end of the spectrum another practitioner can read the feet and interpret the way the client walks through life in a more metaphysical approach.
In between there are various flavours of treatment:- Reflexology and Reiki is one common pairing and Reflexology and Aromatherapy is another.
Of course as well as the traditional foot and hand reflexology treatments you can also experience auricular and facial reflexology in some clinics.
Vertical Reflexology by Lynne Booth details additional techniques which are carried out with the client standing. This technique is very popular especially with clients who find it uncomfortable to have their legs elevated.
But I think the most influential and interesting developments over the past couple of decades are the links with traditional chinese medicine in particular the work of Inge Dougans has been very influential indeeed. Her book Reflexology: The 5 Elements and Their 12 Meridians - A Unique Approach (Paperback) is quite thought-provoking.
I hope to spark your interest in exploring some of these possibilities. Not every theory will appeal to you but sometimes the unexpected happens and you find something which resonates with your own experience and it sets you examining your life experiences from a different point of view.
